An Homage to Shona Elders: Agnes Nyanhongo & Shona Sculptors

Oct 2018

We hope you enjoy this video tour of our show An Homage to Shona Elders: Agnes Nyanhongo & Shona Sculptors

On display: October 26- November 12, 2018

Agnes Nyanhongo is the most well-known Shona female sculptor in the world and one of Africa’s most collected artists. Carrying on her theme of women, children and the role of elders in the community, Agnes will be debuting many new special works this season. Inspired to become an artist by her father, Claudio Nyanhongo, her ideas and art are impacted by her experiences working with him. Her works focus mainly on the human form and express a calm strength while observing and depicting the world around her with dignity and compassion.

In addition to debuting new sculptures by Agnes Nyanhongo, the exhibition will also showcase new work by her brothers, noted sculptors in their own right: Wellington (who has been with the gallery from the beginning) and Moses, their youngest brother who distinguishes himself by creating work that encompasses both a contemporary flair with the traditional African subject matter.

New works will also be seen by gallery favorite Lovemore Bonjisi whose creation of hair on women’s heads is both graceful and distinctive.  On the contemporary side of the gallery, sculptures by Perlagia Mutyavaviri and Peter Gwisa will appeal to those looking for a more abstract feel.
