Sculptor Agnes Nyanhongo, the most renown Shona female sculptor alive in Zimbabwe today, is carrying on the tradition of the first-generation sculptors who founded this distinct stone sculpture movement. For the first time, Agnes, the eldest of the Nyanhongo family and head of the family business, will be in attendance at this year’s debut of our new Shona sculpture collection. Agnes will have many special works, consistent with her theme of women, children, and the role of elders in the community.
In addition to debuting new sculptures by Agnes Nyanhongo, the exhibition will also showcase new work by her brothers, noted sculptors in their own right: Wellington (who has been with the gallery from the beginning) and Moses, their youngest brother who distinguishes himself by creating work that encompasses both a contemporary flair with the traditional African subject matter.
New works will also be seen by gallery favorite Lovemore Bonjisi whose creation of hair on women’s heads is both graceful and distinctive. On the contemporary side of the gallery, sculptures by Perlagia Mutyavaviri and Peter Gwisa will appeal to those looking for a more abstract feel.
